Ice Cream?

July 17, 2006

Hayes has yet to have ice cream. Yes, we’ve been holding out on our son, but we’re doing so to make the experience more memorable for everyone involved. We’re going to Vermont in 3 weeks, and we’re going to Ben & Jerry’s in Waterburry for that first cone.

Now, my first cone was in Stowe, well before Ben & Jerry’s was big enough to warrant a factory. The story goes that I was tentative at first of this cold vanilla conconction, but as soon as I had my first taste I gobbled it up like a kid who’s trying ice cream for the first time. (Ok, lame, I know.)

Anyway, dear reader, we don’t know what type of ice cream Hayes should have for his maiden voyage? Should it be as vanilla as, say… vanilla (Lame again. But keep in mind this kid rates among his favorite foods olives, blue cheese and smoked oysters) or something more like New York Super Fudge Chunk® Ice Cream? We just don’t know.

So, I ask you for help. Please check out Ben & Jerry’s website for flavors and let me know what you think his first taste should be. Also, yes, he is under 2, but no, nuts are not off limits — he loves nuts. Finally, this is in no way associated with Ben & Jerry’s, but, if you’re from Ben & Jerry’s and want to talk, I’m game!

Ok — what flavor should it be?

Home, Uh-hu

July 10, 2006

I’m back!

Yes, you can contain your excitement now.

Ok, please, hold the applause, I’ve got something to say.

Thank you, thank you.

Phew. Anyway, I’m back. Did I already say that?

Vacation was awesome, and best thing is, I’ve got another one coming up in 4 weeks. Yes, life is good.

Hayes really enjoyed his vacation, I think. He gave up his bottles with the nipples for an all sippy cup regimen. He started a 2 o’clock nap schedule, which seems to be working well. And… and… he’s really, really got this talking thing going on.

Now he can tell us what’s on his mind. Is he done in the car?

“All done cah ride”

Does he want to go outside, and be polite about it?

“Outside, pease”

Is he ready to go home?

“Home, uh-hu”

And he even says yes, can pick out exactly what he wants to eat if we show him choices and can make it down the stairs (with supervision) all by himself. Yes, vacation, it learning time for Hayes and… uhm.. relaxing… for us?

Twins Weekend

June 27, 2006

We had an all twin weekend and let me say, all you with twins (childsplay x2 and two okapis, I’m looking at you), you’re my hero. Not sure how you do it.

Ok, now that I got off my chest, Hayes had a day and a night with 2 year old twin girls in Vactionland (otherwise known as Maine) and then a few hours back in Worcester with my college roomate’s two year old sons. It was a great time.

It was fun to see the differences between the boys and girls. Hayes was a wildman in comparison to the girls, and tame in comparison to the boys. Despite that, he clearly enjoyed both thoroughly.

Yup, lots of fun.

On Mommy Bloggers Today

June 16, 2006

For some reason, some reason I could never fathom, the great mom blog, mommybloggers.com wanted me to write a post for them about dads for father’s Day. I guess I know something about being a dad, so I get that part. Anyway, if you can get past the usual spelling mistakes and typos (you’re here, aren’t you?), then it’s worth a look at the first post of mine that made Jen cry. Cars Dads Boys Enjoy!

Don’t Legislate Love

June 6, 2006

I’m sick and tired of all this grandstanding bullshit. I want Hayes to be brought up in a tolerant country, and I just bought a house so I’m not gonna move. So, please, please, please stop trying to legislate love. It’s not only unconstitutional, it’s immoral.

See, I live in a state where same-sex marriages are legal. I can tell you from experience that this has TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY torn our social fabric (go ahead, take that out of context, I dare you). People are running around shooting each other, robbing each other, calling each other names and doing other totally illegal activities. Oh, wait, that happens in your state too? Hmmm… then I guess nothing has really changed.

Gee, what a surprise. I am totally shocked. I thought for sure I’d be killing my neighbors by now and BBQing their kidneys for dinner.

Weird.

So, politicians shut your pie-holes about this same-sex marriage Constitutional ammendment thing. We all know that it’s not going to pass. Instead, let’s staighten our crooked politics instead of our non-straight populace.

I know that you may not agree with it on a religious level, and that’s ok. Agreeing to disagree is one of the things that we should relish about our Constitution mandated freedom, not seek to constrict. So, for all you who are religiously against same sex marriage, don’t marry someone that’s of your same-sex. No one will think the worse of you, I promise.

But don’t tell me I can’t do it. If we start there, next thing you know we’ll be listening in on phone cal… oh wait, nevermind. We’ll be getting into unneccesary millitary conflic… hmmm… Our politicains will be having sex with intern… crap. (See, I’m sort-of equal opportunity.) We’ll be legislating the soap we can buy. Yes, that’s what we’ll be doing.

I know from experience that allowing same-sex marriages in Massachusetts has changed nothing. Except, perhaps, our willingness to accept others. Last I checked, that was a good thing.

12 + 4

May 22, 2006

So, Hayes is officially a year and a quarter today. And he could care less. But, since I’m keeping track, I’ve got something to say about it. Here goes:

Wow! Hayes, dude, you’re getting freakin’ huge. You can walk, talk, climb, run, fall, cry, eat, poop, and just about everything else one can expect from a 16 month old. You’re awesome! And, like your dad, you appear to be aware of your awesomeoness. So, that’s good, too.

Words are coming a couple a day at this point. “Outside” and “inside” were two of them over the weekend. They are important words for Hayes, becuase they give him new freedom to smush flowers and crush ants outside or climb up and stand on chairs or open doors inside. It’s all good for Hayes. And, like most people, he seems to have that grass is greener mentality. It’s always better outside when he’s inside, you know?

Among his favorite things to do these days are eating, sleeping, and running. He’s good at all three. He eats weird things like his daddy (blue cheese, olives, anything Indian) and forgoes more normal foods like chicken. He stuffs his blanket in his mouth by way of letting us know he needs to go to bed and can sleep for 11 hours. And… running. He can run like the wind, take gigantic falls and spring back up like nothing has happened. Yup, he’s a tank.

Hayes, glad you’re here. If things keep progressing at this pace, you’ll be smarter than me in… well.. about 4 months. Ok, maybe not smarter, but likely a better speller.
