The Sleep Challenge Morning Four

May 9, 2005

The weekend was ok. Friday night being the best of the bunch… it seems like he was really starting to make some headway. Then Saturday night he backslid into getting up more and last night was a disaster on par with the first night. Unfortunately, Jen took the brunt of last nights’s issues (HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!), as H got up right before our agreed upon H hand-off time of 3AM. By the time he woke up again at 5ish, I was well rested (as well as I could be anyway) and was able to get H back to sleep without feeding him after 30 minutes of hardcore screaming (I bet I’ll get some confused vistors from google with that wording choice).

So where are we today? Well, for one, we’ve got a call in to the pediatrician to up H’s meds again, as he the reflux warning signs are back and he seems uncomfortable after feedings. For two, we’ve decided to throw some money at the problem in hopes of getting this thing figured out and, based on a suggestion from reader AJ (Dude, what’s with the email address? There’s no spam here. BTW, thanks for the suggestion), are purchasing the Amby Bed.

Since AJ alerted us to its existence, we’ve done alot of research. I found a great write-up on Blogging Baby about it as well as other parents that swear by it. Either Amby’s got a group of fictional Amby-lovers out there talking it up, or this thing may be just what we’re looking for. Of course, now there’s this thing about metal shavings but… well… it sounds more like litigous America than a problem. Plus, we’ll be on the look-out for it just in case.

We’re hoping that this will really help him and that in conjunction with weaning him from night feedings, we may actually be on the road to getting a decent night’s sleep. Right now that seems like a dream… you know… like the ones we don’t get to have these days.

If Not One Thing, Another

April 7, 2005

Well, seems if it’s not one thing it’s another. On our quest to make Hbomb the perfect robot baby, we’ve run into another snag: he just ain’t sleeping. For a while there he got into a pattern. 4 hours, 3 hours, 2 hours and wake up. It was awesome. Now… nada. We’re lucky if it’s 3 hours, 1 hour, 1 hour, wake up for 2 hours, then 2 hours.

We thought the time change would throw him back into a good sleep pattern, since we thought he was going to bed too early. So the day before day light savings he goes to be at 6. Day after day light savings he goes to bed at… 6? How the f’ does he know? I mean, really. One of these days I expect to catch him smoking and drinking the liquor when he thinks no one is looking, then playing baby again as if we didn’t notice. It reminds me of the old Marvin cartoon where Marvin, the infant, says “Hi Dad!” and his dad looks confused then Marvin says “April fools!” And everything returns to normal. I wonder if HBomb isn’t just making up a new malady when we solve one just to keep things interesting.

Pathetic fantasy ramblings aside, this is yet another thing we’d like to get sorted out. One of my best friends told me that when he had his kid, the nights were awful… and then one day, when he finally got to the point where he could no longer take it, his son’s sleeping patern just changed. We passed that point about a month ago. Maybe it’s all HBomb’s drinking when we’re not looking. Come to think of it, the Grey Goose was tasting strangely like water…

Jinxed Us… Again

March 28, 2005

Against my better judgement I wrote that the Prilosec was working and that we had a good weekend with HBomb. Well, guess who had the worst night’s sleep of his life last night? And guess who’s up right now? HBomb. And Hbomb and dad. So… here’s the deal. If I continue writing about colick it’s because it’s still going on. If I don’t…

Prilosec, So Far So Good

March 27, 2005

Ok, at the risk of jinxing us and much to the approval of my mother-in-law, we had a happy first Easter with Hayes. He even slept well the night before. But, I’ve said these things before, so we’re hopefully optimistic, so talk to me in a few weeks. Or a year. Talk to me in a year.

All Colick, All the Time

March 24, 2005

Well, colick is back full force. It’s the screaming-like-my-head-is-on-fire type of colick. HBomb is hungry? Scream! HBomb just ate? Scream! Stop feeding HBomb ‘cause he needs to be burped? Scream!

His sleeping has gotten worse. His feedings have gotten worse. It’s all back to square one. Those of you out there who did not experience a colicky baby should consider themselves lucky. Very lucky. Jen is in bed, I’m going to go have a beer. Another beer.

Prilosec 31 Flavors

March 23, 2005

So I went to the compound pharmacist in the pharmacy compound. Actually, it was more like an office compound, er… complex. But it was a compound pharmacist. I had no idea these places existed. They specialize in custom mixing medications so that they can remove things that the behind the counter people at CVS can’t. For instance, Zantac has alcohol in it when sold from behind the counter. From the compound pharmicist it doesn’t.

The whole thing was a bit disconcerting. I had to walk into a small office complex — and by small I mean tiny — down a hall and then into a doorway where a woman sat in a white lab coat. She was very pleasant, took HBomb’s prescription and asked what flavor I/he wanted. She said grape and vanilla were the best for infants, but she could make strawberry, watermelon strawberry, strawberry grape, watermelon grape, well… you get the idea. I decided on vanilla… and you know what? He likes it. He really likes it!

It was quite a bizarre experience. When I went back to pick it up I was instructed to go wait in an office for the pharmacist to come in and explain the med. It was pretty simple: once a day, refrigerate, 2cc’s. He even gave me this nifty bottle cap for the med that allows you to neatly insert the feeding syringe (two words I never thought I would write in conjunction) without actually opening the cap. What will they think of next?

So the short and skinny is that we’re now onto Prilosec. It should take between 3-5 days for it to kick in. We’ll see what happens next!
