Ice Cream? Not so much

August 16, 2006

Well, we’re back from vacaction, and with vacation came Hayes’ first ice cream experience. Like most of Hayes’ first experiences, it went a bit differently than everyone had thought it would. I guess there’s just something weird about ice cream or vanilla or something, but Hayes, well, he didn’t really care about it. No, actually, we was more than indifferent. He actually didn’t like it at all.

Yes, we gave him the ice cream. We got a smile. But he was done after a couple of bites (!) and he was definitely more interested in the cone. We got a couple of good pictures, but in the end, the ice cream just wasn’t doing it for him.

Think maybe it was a fluke? First time jitters, perhaps? Yah, so did we. It wasn’t. In fact, we took Hayes to get some softserve later on during the vacation and instead of not caring much about it — and to the dismay and humor of onlookers — he started screaming: “N0! No! No!” when we tried to give him the cone. Weird, huh? I know those women looking on and hoping for a icecream dipping love fest were surprised at Hayes’ reaction.

I guess 18 months is too late for the first cone? I don’t know. I’m baffled.

I think it might have a lot to do with how cold ice cream is. My two little cousins weren’t too keen on ice cream at first either. But of course they came around eventually.

Eh, He’ll probably grow into it. My son loves ice cream. When my wife and I are having some softserve he’ll open his mouth like a little bird, and he had his first after he was 18 months. It just takes a bit to get past the coldness ;)

Our son didn’t like ice cream at all at first either. In fact it took quite a while for him to like it and then only vanilla. He’s almost three now and he’s more interested but not crazy about it.

Calmly now. You’re going to give the little dude performance anxiety. Like Christine says Lucas has never really got all that wound up about ice cream. I’m nuts about it, she isn’t. He’s kind of half way.

I love ice cream. I LOVE it. My wife never touches the stuff.

I guess the real question is, who’s better off?

I don’t think that eating an ice cream is an important developmental stage, Eric! Give the wee lad some seasonal fruit and don’t rush to habituate/addict him to processed, sugary, fatty foods… what do you want, a butter barrel for a child?
