Ice Cream?

July 17, 2006

Hayes has yet to have ice cream. Yes, we’ve been holding out on our son, but we’re doing so to make the experience more memorable for everyone involved. We’re going to Vermont in 3 weeks, and we’re going to Ben & Jerry’s in Waterburry for that first cone.

Now, my first cone was in Stowe, well before Ben & Jerry’s was big enough to warrant a factory. The story goes that I was tentative at first of this cold vanilla conconction, but as soon as I had my first taste I gobbled it up like a kid who’s trying ice cream for the first time. (Ok, lame, I know.)

Anyway, dear reader, we don’t know what type of ice cream Hayes should have for his maiden voyage? Should it be as vanilla as, say… vanilla (Lame again. But keep in mind this kid rates among his favorite foods olives, blue cheese and smoked oysters) or something more like New York Super Fudge Chunk® Ice Cream? We just don’t know.

So, I ask you for help. Please check out Ben & Jerry’s website for flavors and let me know what you think his first taste should be. Also, yes, he is under 2, but no, nuts are not off limits — he loves nuts. Finally, this is in no way associated with Ben & Jerry’s, but, if you’re from Ben & Jerry’s and want to talk, I’m game!

Ok — what flavor should it be?

I’ve always like Cherry Garcia and Phish Food. And of course anything that has the word brownie in the title. But for that first taste, vanilla might be the best start. Easier to clean than chocolate.

Make it something memorable: Chunky Monkey or Phish Food.

Hey, is that a crack at me? I know I’ve put a little weight on recently, but c’mon!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Seriuosly, the best of both worlds.

    Vanilla.

Or something you like in case he doesn’t and you’re “stuck” finishing it.

    Also swing by Montreal.

  • Sean says:

    Vanilla

Everything else afterward will be a step up, but if you pass by vanilla for something more ornate, he might never have the chance to truly enjoy the simple pleasure of vanilla.

Ummmm Coffee Heath Bar Crunch…..or Half Baked-both great choices!

    Vanilla Bean, or Strawberry.

    Actually, why not both?!

Ok. Until recently I was living on the other side of the “Notch” in Jeffersonville, VT (during the summer, 20 minutes from said factory). I would have to say the best ice cream flavor to give to a baby is Oatmeal Cookie Chunk - it’s the absolute best. It’s oatmeal cookies with chunks of chocolate in vanilla ice cream. It had come out as a limited batch in 2003, but since it was sooooo terrific they’ve decided to keep it around as a regular flavor. I’m sure your little one loves oatmeal cookies - right? So, what could be better for his first ice cream experience?

Let me know how it goes!

    coffee?

I have to agree with Sean. Start with the basics — either Vanilla or Chocolate (or whatever B&J call them). You can add accoutrements later. These are the building block flavors of the ice cream world.

Also, if you really want to go all out, check out the Four Sea’s ice cream shop in Centerville, MA down on Cape Cod. They were shown on the recent PBS ice cream special, and it has some of the highest butter fat content or any ice cream. YUM! plus, the guy makes it himself every day!!
