Batten Down The Furniture

September 14, 2005

It’s now official. he’s crawling, much to dismay and displeasure of the cat. And, you know, the parents. Well, ok, it’s not bad at all… it’s just that we’re not ready. We need to buy all those thingies that make your house safe for crawlers. Like nerf furniture, that type of stuff.

Oh well, we knew it was coming. And it’s damn cute. In fact, we’re proud of him. It’s great. Gotta get those safetfy things, though. Last thing we need is another disaster of a hospital trip

Honestly, most of our baby proofing involved large openings that he could fall through. Part of me figures that there are going to be hard things that he will encounter for the rest of his life and he better get used to dealing with them and not bashing his head off them. You’ll find, sadly, that the thing he’ll have the most problems with is the floor. It’s hard. It’s right there. Whomp.

I’m scared about this day. I’m scared we won’t be ready, and I’m scared I won’t be around when it starts.

At the same time…I can’t wait!

Neil (and Eric) my wife keeps reminding me of something. Appreciate now. Your kid will be embarrassed of you soon enough.

Walking is a synapse connection away my friend. Oh, and the rubber corner guards? They make fantastic chew toys. Enjoy your new daily workout.

I still have a house full of baby gates and void spots where furniture used to be!

  • Cameron says:

In all seriousness, we have a gate at the top and one at the bottom of the stairs, those plug things for electrical sockets and that’s it. The rule is “if it’s sharp or pointy or just heavy and hard put it where he can’t reach it.”

We’re crossing the same threshold here. And who knew we had so many wires? Nerf furniture for sure. Or wrestling mats in lieu of floorng and wallpaper. I wish you luck.

We had to baby-proof our kitchen at an early stage. Apparently Daniel is an expert at finding sharp knives. It’s always lovely to find your six month son looking at a sharp Wusthof knife…
The drawers are now baby-proof but it’s friggin annoying until you get used to it.

    Good luck

I was so aggravated when it came to shopping for baby-proofing stuff on-line. Onestepahead.com has a really good selection (Safety > Childproofing the home). They also had a soft gate for large openings - something I couldn’t find at my local retailers.

Good luck! The fun has just begun.

This babyproofing is on the horizon for me. I would like further off on the horizon, but it could be next week for all I know.
