HBO

August 17, 2005

Somethings never change. I was watching Campus Man yesterday on HBO while H sat and played on his exersaucer. It’s a really bad 80’s movie that, I’m embarrasses to say, I’ve seen more than a dozen times.

Yup, that’s because I grew up with HBO and, since cartoons at the time were either not on or were of the Care Bear variety (after GI Joe and Heeman, that is) I spent a considerable amount of time watching movies over and over.

Movies like Just One of the Guys were an HBO staple. I must have watched that 25 times, if not more. I certainly watched it enough to make the connection that the brother, who had compelling lines like “Nope. I’m horny. Horny will kick embarrassment’s ass anytime. ” in the movie is now spouting lines like “HDTV, DLP, I needed help” as a shill for Circuit City.

And as I got older, the list of movies on HBO heavy rotation (keep in mind there was only 1 HBO at the time) grew to include: The Freshman (what ever happened to Bruno Kirby, I mean at the time you couldn’t get away from him?), Back to School (They are making a remake of this with Mr Movie Poison himself, Cedric the Entertainer) and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.(A new Terry Gillaim movie comes out next week! Hooray!)

And guess what? They’re still showing ‘em. Jen and I watched The Freshman on OnDemand, a service I could only dream of at the time, on Sunday. Of course, if they had had OnDemand when I was growing up then they would have had the 72 cartoon channels they do now and I wouldn’t have watched all those movies.
