The Crying Game

August 8, 2005

Ok, I didn’t see the movie, but like everyone else who hasn’t seen it and has been living on this planet, I know the outcome. And this was nothing like that. Nothing. Nope, it’s just a sorta-but-not-really clever title for my first post back from vacation.

That’s right, vacation. You may recall that our last foray at a vacation was less than successful (in fact, if you look back four posts, you’ll see the post for it… I need to start writing more often). That, as it has come to be called, was our practice vacation. This one, well, it was going to be the real vacation.

And you know, what?

It was great.

Ok, so where does “The Crying Game” come into play? I know, some of you are out there thinking, “I could choose a movie title at random, use it as my post title and then make no attempt to connect to it.” But that’s not me. Nosirreebob.

So let me set this up. We were in a 4 bed, 4 bath condo up in the Green Mountains of Vermont, specifically, the resort of Sugarbush. Three of the beds were upstairs. One, down stairs. Since H still naps quite a bit– though his napping became more regular and less frequent over the vacation — we figured downstairs was a good idea. Mind you, he had already taken a nap upstairs and had slept the night before at Jen’s parents’ place. Was Hayes down with it?

Uhh… no. To put it lightly.

He fell right to sleep without crying at about 7. Good start. At 9 he woke up and cried lightly for a few minutes. It happens sometimes. Then the crying increased. And increased and increased. Jen went in to check on him and couldn’t get him back to sleep. He quieted down some, so I went in to check on him. That’s about when all hell broke loose. It was as if H didn’t recognize me. We looked at me and started screaming, burying his head in Jen’s armpit. I tried to take him, but he wouldn’t come close to me. Just would shreik and look away.

It was awful.

No they say that little changes in a baby’s environment can be big disruptions. Well, this one was HUGE. After about an hour of this, I decided we should take him for a car ride. And you know what? It calmed him down. Almost immediately. We took him back and put him to bed in our room and there he slept for the rest of the vacation. Of course, we tried another nap in the downstairs room several days later in hopes that we might get him to sleep without us at night. But the same thing happened. Oh well.

Despite that, the vacation was great. And much needed. Now if only we could do those once a month. Yup, and maybe I’ll become a head of state. Right.
