Another Weekend, Another Wedding

April 30, 2005

For the second weekend in a row, we’ve got a wedding to go to. This one in New Jersey to which the boy has been invited. So , basically, we’re taking HBomb on his longest car trip ever, 2 times longer than his previous, and we’re taking him to his first large social event.

I think I’m more concerned about the car ride then the wedding. After all, we went out to dinner with H last night and he was perfect. No problems, just smiling at everyone who looked his way. And after a tough work and HBomb sleep week for Jen and I, that’s exactly what we needed.

No, it’s the car ride that I’m worried about. Unlike most babies, or either of his parents, for that matter, HBomb doesn’t like to sleep in the car. He prefers to look out the window, get bored and start crying for someone to pay attention to him. Also, there’s the fact that he needs to eat about every two hours and it’s a 4+ hour trip. Oh… and there’s the return trip tomorrow. Yes, I am worried about this.

In fact, H is already whining. Perhaps that means he’ll pass out when we hit the road in an hour or so. Let’s hope.

We took Albert to my parents house for Christmas… when he was just THREE WEEKS OLD. It’s an eight hour trip. Which took fourteen. And seemed like three weeks. We stopped at every Cracker Barrell we could find. They were totally cool about letting us use the bathrooms/changing station without buying something, and looked the other way when we sat in their parking lot to breast feed. McDonald’s was the only fast food joint we found that had changing stations. Imagine if you will, driving from fast food place to fast food place, exit to exit, until you find a changing station. That was our trip. Thankfully Albert had no trouble sleeping in the car. So, between feedings (every. two. hours.) we actually made some progress.

Yikes! We make the trip to NJ with our two kids, 1 and 3, regularly to visit family. We always take off at 7PM or later and bring an audiobook for us. I’ve actually come to sort of look forward to the road trip. The kids sleep through it, and my husband and I get a chance to talk and listen to a good book.

We always stay in one of those suite hotels that has a kitchenette and a livingroom and set the portacrib up in the spare room. Since we go regularly we signed up for the hotel chain’s rewards card, and now we pretty regularly get upgraded to a two-bedroom suite, which gives the kids a room of their own to sleep in. Nice if we want to watch tv or read in the living room when they’re sleeping.

    Good luck!
