SAHD? Hardly.

April 14, 2005

Why is the abbreviation for stay-at-home-day SAHD (pronounced, I would think “sad”) Am I sad to be a stay at home dad? Nope. Is Hayes sad that I’m a stay at home dad? He’s crying now, but I don’t think that’s related.

Fact is, this is tough and taxing so far. Lots of work to do and very little time to do it. And I keep picking up new work. And then there’s this little guy, tha apple of my eye, who does his best to make me work for him. Ah, the conflicted life of a stay-at-home-dad.

But I’m not sad. Nor do I think the acronym should be. I propose we stop using the word “stay” in our description. Doesn’t “at home dad” mean the same thing? If we want more respect from the ladies and general public for taking on this most important role in the rearing of our children, I think we would be better served to be know as AHDs (”ad”s). Afterall, we’re a wonderful addition to our child’s upbringing, not a reason to get sad.

I have to say that the stay does seem unnecessary, it has a kind of “forced to’ tone to it, like the dicks who say “yeah, I’m baby-sitting the kids today” (is your wife paying you by the hour? if not, you aren’t baby-sitting you prat.).

Plus it sounds more like a syndrome this way, and syndromes are very in.

I think it is pretty cool that you get to be home with your baby. How old is he??

Love it! (Both your proposed new acronym AND your new website design, though I will miss the floating bottle.)

I am so jealous that you get to be an AHD. I wish I had that opportunity. However, I think those who do and write about their experiences will do wonders to change perceptions that fathers lack a “maternal” instinct to adequately raise our children. Keep up the good work!

BTW, I do miss the bottle as well - I did feel it was an “inside-joke” and I’m never in on inside-jokes.

Well I like the acronym WAHD because raising a child at home is hard work. Besides, I think it’s funny that someone and blow their WAHD.
