More Stay At Home Dad

April 4, 2005

Well, today is my last week at work, as Jen goes back a week from today. That’s right, I’m going to be a stay at home, work at home dad. Starting next week.

Starting next week.

Starting next week. It’s starting to sink in.

We’ve been discussing this for… well… since we found out Jen was pregant. Child care in the city of Boston is outrageous, setting us back around $2k a month for a reputable place. We figured that I could actually make more money for the family by working from home 20 hours a week then I could working 40+ and putting HBomb in the care of strangers.

Jen’s got the health insurance and the higher paying job, so she’s the obvious choice to go back to work. She also has a job that needs to see her on a daily basis and have her work 8 hours in a row, unlike my job for a black ops unit of the CIA as a web designer, which allows me to work from home at off-hours.

In the end it was an easy choice.

do you know poppalarge.blogspot.com? You be in the same boat. Can’t wait to hear how it goes…

Eric, good luck. I’m still struggling with the balance. The thing you have to guard against is that when the little basta.. umm.. sweet bundle of joy goes down for his nap you don’t go “ahh.. sweet relaxing silence” and then do something totally not work related.

    Like video games.

    Or, you know, reading blogs.

    A lot.

Hey best of luck! But look at it this way, you get to kiss and cuddle Hayes in between diaper changes. Fun!

I know just how you feel. I was a little nervous when I quit my job as a male exotic dancer. I do so miss my elephant head g-string…

    “elephant head g-string”

    IT BURNS IT BURNS

PoppaLarge has just posted his first day alone with his little one. Looks like stay at home dads are all the rage! PoppaLarge is a must read, but don’t let it scare you! I’m sure it will all go great after a few adjustments for you and H.

Oh, I read pappa large. Did you notice my posting on his site when he announced he would be a stay at home dad? Oh, a bit of foreshadowing it was!

Saty at home/ work from home Dads are the rage. My husband, Damon, does it. Except Fuller isn’t weaned yet, so he gets to go on business trips with me. Like business trips to Boston! In May!
    Look forward to your posts.

Good luck!! I’d be interested to hear how it goes. My wife and i are in a similar situation and we thought about the “dad stays home and Duh-Signs” thing. I think we’ve put the idea to bed until #2 (YIKES) comes along.

But yeah - childcare is expensive - runs about the same here in Chi’town.

Anyway - hope it works out. You’ll defintely have the bonus of not having to sit in a cube staring at the H-bombs photos all day wishing you were at home.

W00t! Welcome to the stay-at-home nation, man!

  • Cameron says:

“stay-at-home nation”? WE NEED NICE T-SHIRTS THAT SAY THAT. AND WE NEED THEM NOW!

  • More Diapers says:

Cameron, don’t you live in a different country? I think someone needs to make t-shirts that say “Stay at home dad” in big letter. Cafe Press, anyone?

  • Elizabeth and Emily says:

That’s insane! What you are paying for daycare up there is outrageous. Here you would pay, maybe $100 to $200 tops! For less than $2000 you could have a live-in nanny to care for your child/ren, cook, and clean.
You are amazing for staying home and you will do a wonderful job and enjoy it, I bet. I am really looking forward to seeing your posts.
