An Enigma Wrapped In a Riddle

March 31, 2005

We’re trying to figure out why HBomb seems to sleep better when we visit people. His two best nights’ sleeps have come, one each, at the grandparents. Now, this could be coincidence — grandparents, we’re sure this is a coincidence, so we don’t need to come visit more often — but there are certainly some things that both sets of grandparents homes have that our home doesn’t.

For one, it’s quite a bit more quite in suburban Western Mass and Connecticut. It’s also quite a bit darker. Boston, which has a ton going for it, can’t boast darkness. Then there’s the fact that both rooms we stay in at the respective grandparents have been quite cool.

So, as far as we can tell, that gives us four things (quite, darkness, temperature and coincidence) it could be, or a combination of them. I’m not sure what that works out to as far as our chances, but we’re trying everything.

Tonight we thought maybe he would like to sleep in his own room. I hung blankets over the curtains on the windows to stop the light from the building across the alley from making the room too bright. It’s also colder back there for some reason. Finally, not being directly on the street, it’s quiter. That experiment lasted all of 30 minutes. Now he’s peacefully swinging in the livingroom. Oh well. One of these days he’s gonna sleep!

(BTW, I just saw a preview for Alot Like Love the new Ashton Kutcher vehicle… when is this kids 15 minutes going to be up? I mean, to borrow a phrase, he’s a no talent ass clown.)

Jinxed Us… Again

March 28, 2005

Against my better judgement I wrote that the Prilosec was working and that we had a good weekend with HBomb. Well, guess who had the worst night’s sleep of his life last night? And guess who’s up right now? HBomb. And Hbomb and dad. So… here’s the deal. If I continue writing about colick it’s because it’s still going on. If I don’t…

Prilosec, So Far So Good

March 27, 2005

Ok, at the risk of jinxing us and much to the approval of my mother-in-law, we had a happy first Easter with Hayes. He even slept well the night before. But, I’ve said these things before, so we’re hopefully optimistic, so talk to me in a few weeks. Or a year. Talk to me in a year.

Doctor? President? No. Try Rock Star

March 25, 2005

Maybe it’s generational, but I think I would be somewhat disappointed if HBomb became a doctor or the president or a lawyer or something. In fact, the most corporate I hope he gets would be architect, and then he better be a student of Pei or Gehry, you know the Ayn Rand Atlas Shrugged breaking the rules type.

Personally I’d be happy with rock star. And based on his in-tune screaming and Jen’s background as a professional simger, I’d say he’s got a chance. Even if he followed in his dad’s footsteps and became an artist, that’d be cool.

But I want him to be a good singer. Chicks dig good singers. Next step is to teach him to scream the scale. We’re working on it.

All Colick, All the Time

March 24, 2005

Well, colick is back full force. It’s the screaming-like-my-head-is-on-fire type of colick. HBomb is hungry? Scream! HBomb just ate? Scream! Stop feeding HBomb ‘cause he needs to be burped? Scream!

His sleeping has gotten worse. His feedings have gotten worse. It’s all back to square one. Those of you out there who did not experience a colicky baby should consider themselves lucky. Very lucky. Jen is in bed, I’m going to go have a beer. Another beer.
