Jinxed Us… Again

March 28, 2005

Against my better judgement I wrote that the Prilosec was working and that we had a good weekend with HBomb. Well, guess who had the worst night’s sleep of his life last night? And guess who’s up right now? HBomb. And Hbomb and dad. So… here’s the deal. If I continue writing about colick it’s because it’s still going on. If I don’t…

hey!!! I haven’t been reading the blog since you guys left the hospital but I just spent an hour going through it and it sounds like Emily. ugh!! It should be f’ing illegal. She did not sleep for three months, I swear to god. When she was three months old, I put the plugs in and I shut her door, went to my room, and shut my door, too. I got into bed and I put a pillow ove my head. I felt bad but shear exhaustion won out. I only had 6 weeks of maternity leave, and I didn’t have anyone to hand her off to. She slept for the first time that night, and she has slept ever since then. I think that they will take all of the attention they can get but once they are old enough to go for 4-5 hours without eating and if it’s night time, they should be sleeping and that’s when you have to start ignoring them. It’s hard. I know. But you are helping them to learn the good habit of sleepy time. You can go in for a second to make sure they don’t have a foot caught or a fever and I mean a second, and then get the hell out of there and let them cry. Once he gets his first taste of a long long sleep, he’ll like it and little by little they learn that you’re not coming back and it’s time for sleep.
I’m glad you are finding the earplugs useful. Nope, it wasn’t a joke. I still keep a pair in the car handy because she does still melt down in the car. I’m sure you’ve found out by now that you can still hear them even with the earplugs in. It just takes the edge off somewhat. So do you have that same thought that I have when I use them? Ok, I squished the spongy plug into my ear and so it’s not really blocking the sound effectively yet. Oh, I wish the plug would hurry and come out of the scrunched-up shape it’s in and fully expand already and block out this unbearable din!” There are other types that are not spongy and I have tried them all. The spongy ones block out the sound the best, in my opinion.
Also, if you haven’t found a diaper genie yet that you like, I have. I researched it carefully while pregnant and I saw the ones where you are supposed to twist the diaper in and I thought, “No, there will be no twisting of shitty diapers.” The one I have and like very much is the Diaper Dekor Plus. Yes, you have to get the Plus version. It is pretty much like those old trash cans where you step on the pedal and it opens the top. With the Dekor Plus, under the top is a set of little trap doors that open downward. Then you just drop the diaper in through these trap doors that shut as it passes easily through. They open right up, Eric, so there’s no twisting to get the diaper through the doors and then they shut. Then, you let your foot off the pedal and the top goes down, covering the little trap doors. Well, if you don’t have a diaper genie you love yet, then I will be more than happy to send one to you. The only thing is that about once every three months, you should really give it a thorough washing with bleach because it starts to get stinky, defeating the whole purpose of the diaper genie.
Hang in there. He will sleep one day and so will you and Jen. Hard to believe that day will come, isn’t it?? But it WILL!!

Yep hang in there. Our son (4 1/2 mos) was pretty hard for a while with his coliky belly. He had such bad gas and couldn’t get it all out so he would scream for hours. Nothing we did would help. Then before I knew it it was over. He now goes to bed around 8pm and sleeps to 5:30 the next morning and then wakes his mom up for breakfast.

You’ll get through it soon enough.

Ok, from a mother of 3 grandmother of 2. The vacum cleaner could be your best friend. Sounds nuts, but when my #1 got colicy, which seemed to be EVERY night between 7:00pm and 10:00 I found that if I ran the vac
I didn’t hear as much, and he seemed somehow soothed by the sound. Dumb, but it worked. By the way, his Dad happened to work the swing shift at the time, got home about 10:30, by which time child was the happiest thing you ever saw. ARRUUGGGGGG!!!!!!
