Near Disaster

March 20, 2005

Ok, an admitted overstatement, but a near disaster nonetheless. Yet again we made the mistake of switching formula. The Ailumentum isn’t working, I said. I think the soy works just as well, I told Jen. Yah. Right. Our two day experiment has come to a not-so-dramatic end. No more soy, hooray Ailumentum. Yes, the new gold standard in formula is also the standard in our home. We love to pay close to $9 a day on formula. Love it.

But whatcha gonna do?

HBomb’s got an appetite and, like his parents, thinks the most expensive things taste best. Of course he hasn’t had McDonald’s yet. That’ll throw his expensive tastes into a tizzy.

On the other hand, hopefully this means we’ll have a young sushi lover on our hands. I need more excuses to order out sushi. Or we could always go the Minado for all-you-can-eat sushi (BTW, NYC’ers and NJ’ers, if you get a chance check it out… good sushi, all-you-can-eat!) As much as I love to make it, sometimes it’s nice to eat someone else’s.

Yo Eric, I read your plight with formula.. my sister sent me this - we’re seriously considering it:

I have been doing a lot of reading about nutrition lately and wanted to share this with you. Gabriel (her youngest of three) has been on formula since I weaned him a few months ago. I hate the stuff, but it was time for him to stop nursing and I didn’t know what else to turn to.

I told you that the kids are on a completely additive free, natural and mostly organic diet now. Gabriel is the lone holdout because of his formula
consumption. Today, after much research, I made the switch to goat’s milk for him and I wanted to recommend that you guys skip formula altogether and use goats milk instead.

This is a recipe for balanced nutrition goat’s milk formula for a baby Concetta Pearl’s age:

Goat’s Milk Formula Recipe for ages 1 week to 3 months
    1 gallon raw goat’s milk
    1/2 tsp. blackstrap molasses (uncultured)
1 capsule folic acid (800 mcg.)
    1 capsule vitamin E (100 I.U)
1/16 tsp. Vitamin C (powdered ascorbate 2000 mcg)

Goat’s milk can be frozen for up to six months, so you can freeze it in small quantities and thaw it out as you need it.

Here: (http://www.whiteegretfarm.com/html/vscows.html) are some very compelling reasons to not use formula or cow’s milk.

Gabriel took to the goat formula like it was a long lost friend. Goat’s milk seems expensive. I am planning to buy it online from White Egret Farms for $7.50 a half gallon. (That’s about half what it costs at the local grocer.) That means it is $15.00 per gallon versus the $12.00 a gallon I pay for the powdered poison that I am currently using. I think I can handle the additional three dollar expense.
Anyway, I just thought I would pass this along. It’s super easy to whip up, and it is a heck of a lot better for growing bodies. Concetta Pearl would
    thank you.
    Your crazy sister,
    Erika

Somehow we completely avoided formula with all three kids. So what do I know. But for the parents I strongly recommend a Cote du Rhone. Or just vodka straight up.

    Hey Eric and Jen!
Sorry to hear about your ordeal at Childrens, though glad everything worked out okay. We had Cole on Alimentum, or as we called it liquid gold because of its cost…You may want to check with your insurance, Cole had to be on it so they paid for all of it. 7 cases would arrive at our door every month no charge….Then you can save the extra money and go out for sushi Hope all is well….

The worst part about Alimentum, much worse than the cost, is the horrible smell! The predigested whatever is just plain nasty, and it smells even worse when the kid spews it up.
I don’t know what HBomb’s particular digestive problem is (heven’t read this blog that comprehensively) but our twins had reflux so we tried everything under the sun. If you think one kid puking all the time is bad, wait ’til you experience it in stereo. My wife felt like she was covered in barf for 6 months straight. We tried all the formula options, and breastmilk too (except for the goat’s milk) but in the end, plain old formula was as good as anything else when the bmilk ran out. The doctors all said “don’t worry, they’ll grow out of it around 6 months” and what do you know, they were right.

I too gave my kid Alimentum. She hated it, I can’t say I liked it much either…it smells like monkey balls (at least I am pretty sure that is how monkey balls smell. I switched back to Soy. It was a money saver and better smell.

Ah, the formula budget. We buy the soy stuff by the case. In fact, by the multi-case. I need one of them Sam’s-sized carts to haul off the stuff… My favorite part? The ounces left over at the end of each bottle. Those half-ounces, ounces… freggin add up. I don’t even wanna calculate how many cases get thrown away!

    Buy watson brand soma.

Soma side effects. Soma muscle relaxant.
